Solstice poem for Augustbursting into consciousness
his eyes greet the light like a new friend
a bounce, a smile, a bounce and stop to inspect it
how can I sleep when blue lights are twinkling?
outside
other babies, other cries
other mothers soothing down the night
and here, here is one...
fumbling in his perfect grace
the textures just beyond reach
mouth of concentration
fingers that won't quite collaborate
with the yearning to know, to feel
to consume the brightness with abandon
laugh just because it's funny
it's funny to be here with you in this place
knowing the secrets that we know
just you and me and the fuzzy giraffe...
(our faithful friend, our camel in the desert)
you know the story,
mother Mary, baby Jesus and the rest of it...
just you and me
on a winter's day
